FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Dragon Boat Teams Race to the Start
On August 24 thirty (30) teams of twenty paddlers, a drummer and a steersperson will race to the start in New Glasgow. Teams will come from corporations, area industries, small businesses, financial institutions, service clubs, and community organizations. Other will be made up of groups of individuals, both local and visiting. All team members will work together to achieve their goals - whether it’s staying in stroke, paddling very fast, or being in the boat by reaching a fitness level. Whatever it is, all team members will race to raise funds for the Nova Scotia Amateur Sport Fund (SportFund), Nova Scotia Special Olympics, and Women Alike Abreast a River, three charities which enable more and more of our population to be active and to achieve their goals. As Special Olympians say “Let me win but if I cannot, let me do my best”.
A typical Hong Kong style dragon boat is 12 meters (39 ft) long, 1 meter (3 ft) wide and weighing almost 1 ton, propelled forward by your friends and neighbours. Its size and design promote stability and are very suitable for beginners. Due to the width of the East River and the tidal schedule, Race on the River has limited the 2002 Pictou County Dragon Boat Festival to thirty (30) teams. Teams are recruited by invitation. As of April 28, 2002, thirteen (13) teams have committed their entries:
