Seize the Spirit of the Dragon in Pictou County
Twenty-two (22) people in a team, pulling together, being the best they can be! This is the symbol of sport, whether it’s a backyard soccer game or a national championship – participation and working towards your goals. On August 23 & 24 on the East River at the New Glasgow Riverfront, dragon boat teams will congregate from throughout our community and beyond to race to raise public awareness and funds for the Nova Scotia Amateur Sport Fund
(SportFund), Nova Scotia Special Olympics, and Women Alike Abreast a River Dragon Boat Team.
The activity of dragon boat racing pre-dates biblical times. Originating in southern China 2,400 years ago, the traditional Dragon Boat Race has been held as part of an annual festival celebration religiously observed in the spring as a fertility rite to ensure bountiful crops. The mythical dragons of Asia are considered to be positive, symbolizing success, prosperity and good luck. Today, Dragon Boat Festivals are held all over the world, with Canada holding 24 festivals coast to coast, being one of the fastest growing athletic events in the world. We join this elite group.
On August 23 & 24, Race on the River will introduce the sport of dragon boat racing to hundreds of people while at the same time raising funds. We promote athleticism, teamwork, community involvement and, most important, old-fashioned fun! The best thing about Race on the River is that any skill level can quickly adapt to the sport. No prior experience is necessary. And, everyone can participate – as a racer, a supporter, a spectator.
Twenty (20) paddlers, a drummer and a steersperson per boat; 660 racers plus hundreds of support teams will converge at Glasgow Square in support of our three charities. Friday will open with the ceremonial Awakening of the Dragon followed by an entertainment-filled “kitchen party” at the outdoor theatre of Glasgow Square. Racing will start at 8am Saturday on the East River, continuously running until 4pm. Entertainment and a host of activities will thrill all. Be there on August 23 & 24 and join in the excitement!
