Pictou County Dragon Boat Festival
Anticipation Growing Strong!
New Glasgow – Details for the 3rd Annual Pictou County
Dragon Boat Festival (PCDBF), Race on the River were
released on Wednesday evening at Glasgow Square. Glasgow
Square’s Green Room provided the prefect setting for
this growing festival! For the PCDBF slated for August
20th to 21st, 2004, this will mark the third year for
the event, with presenting sponsor SOBEYS, Ready to
Serve
Over 40 teams, totaling approximately one thousand
participants will meet on New Glasgow’s East River at
8AM sharp on Saturday to race for charity! Teams will
gather to participate in their division, raising money
for four charities: Women Alike Breast Cancer Support
Group is the Festival’s primary benefactor; with
secondary benefactors: N.S. Special Olympics, N.S.
Amateur Sport and their newest charity, Pictou County
Prostate Cancer Support Group. To date, just under
$200,000 has been raised through the pledge program,
with all proceeds going directly to these charities.
Once again this year the top pledge raisers will become
eligible to win many attractive prizes, with the top
pledge raiser winning, courtesy of Century Saw & Marine,
a 13’ Spirit Kayak with paddles, lifejacket and all the
trimmings.
After the McDonald’s Youth Races at 6:30PM, Chairperson
Roger Swarbrick and Honorary Chairperson of this year’s
festival will open the Race on the River with the
traditional “dotting of the eye”! This will be followed
by live stage entertainment at 8PM featuring Pictou’s
very own John “Spyder” MacDonald and Clear Sailing! The
“Celebration of Light and Life” at 9:30PM will end the
evening with a moving finale in celebration of life,
hope, community and the spirit of the dragon.
The organizing committee is delighted to be entering
year three of this growing festival and urge all to join
in the celebration of community spirit when the dragon
awakens on Friday, August 20th 2004. “Paddles up ~ and
away!”
